Check Point

objective:
create a tool for writing + a source of light that live together, speak the same form language, and spark creativity whether in mindful routine, appearance, or purpose.
form development:
using sketches as a starting point, it was difficult to find a form motif that worked well with both pen and lamp. it wasn't until physical prototyping that a unique form direction was discovered
ideation:
inspired by raindrops, and the many concentric forms documented in nature, a simple and versatile motif was explored.
form selection:
after selecting a form motif, many options were explored until selection
aluminum manufacturing:
through much trial and error, the CNC base was finished.
surface finish:
to best hide imperfections, cnc lines, and dust, the base was bead-blasted and received a vibratory tumble finish from a local machine shop.
lighting:
a paper lantern diffuser was selected to contrast the many modern manufacturing methods explored throughout this project.
[further diffuser refinements are ongoing]
features:
the dimmer switch provides a familiar tactile control for brightness.
a provided pen complements the form of the lamp.
